Students wanting to appeal their state aid ineligibility must do so in the Academic Standards Office, Twin Rise 100. Appeals are only granted when students can document extenuating circumstances to the satisfaction of the Director of Academic Standards. An extenuating circumstance is something that was beyond your control, such as a (severe) personal illness, the death or illness of an immediate family member, extreme personal emotional stress, and serious personal circumstances. You should document the extenuating circumstance you are listing on your petition by submitting a note (on official letterhead) from a doctor, counselor, or legal system representative that notes the nature of the issue and the date(s) the issue occurred. Citing such issues as work or extra-curricular commitments, not being aware of college deadlines, and the difficulty level of course material will not result in a TAP/APTS appeal approval.
Prior to contacting the Academic Standards Office about an appeal, students should review TAP/APTS eligibility information so they are aware of the cause of their ineligibility prior to their appeals meeting and can come prepared to discuss the circumstances impacting state aid eligibility issues. Students with cumulative GPAs of 2.0 or better who are seeking to appeal their TAP/APTS eligibility should call 716-878-5222 to schedule an appointment; students with cumulative GPAs of less than a 2.0 should call 716-878-5451 to schedule an appointment. All students should bring the necessary documentation to their appointment to expedite the state aid appeal process. Approved TAP/APTS appeals are due by the last day of the semester a student wishes to receive aid, although securing the appeal sooner will reduce the likelihood of late fees and holds on accounts.
TAP/APTS policy limits students to one aid appeal as an undergrad and one aid appeal as a graduate student, even if the student has attended multiple schools.
