The Academic Support Programs unit of University College offers several noncredit academic transitions courses to help students succeed in more advanced courses. Students may be directed to these courses after taking placement or competency exams, or they may enroll simply to improve basic skills areas.
Meeting the Writing Requirements
The required writing courses are offered through University College in the College Writing Program (CWP). Students must demonstrate writing proficiency at the CWP101 and 102 levels (College Writing I and II). If necessary, students can develop the skills that will prepare them for CWP101 by taking CWP099 (Developmental Writing). Although it does not carry academic credit, CWP099, for financial aid purposes, is considered equivalent to a 3-credit course.
Students admitted to Buffalo State College will qualify for one of the three levels (unless they earn an exemption) on the basis of the College Writing Program's PROCEDURES FOR PLACEMENT (Click on this link for detailed information.).
Meeting the Mathematics Requirements
To graduate, all freshmen, as of fall 2000, must demonstrate proficiency in mathematics at the pre-calculus level.
Any entering student (as of fall 2000) has fulfilled the college's competency requirement if he or she has
- earned at least an 85 on the Regents Math III final exam.
- received a 500 or higher on the SAT Mathematics exam.
- scored a 2 or higher on the AP Calculus AB Exam.
- taken and passed fourth-year Mathematics in high school.
Students not transferring college-level math courses from another institution may take an optional assessment test offered through the Academic Skills Center. The test can help students and their advisers decide what developmental courses meet the students' needs.
To prepare for Buffalo State's math requirement, students can take MAT 097 (Basic Mathematics) and MAT 098. Although these courses do not carry academic credit, MAT 097, for financial aid purposes, is equivalent to a 3-credit course, and MAT 098 is equivalent to a 1-credit course.
