English as a Second Language Program

Buffalo State College
English as a Second Language Program

At Buffalo State, more than 9,000 undergraduate students are driven to learn from professors who specialize in teaching and mentoring, tackling coursework from over 160 undergraduate programs that challenge and inspire. Located in a bustling urban location, Buffalo State is a vibrant academic community for students who are driven to succeed: our graduates are sought after by local, national, and international employers.

Buffalo State's international students have come from countries across the globe, including Australia, Canada, China, Cambodia, India, Japan, Kenya, Singapore, South Korea, Nigeria, and the United Kingdom.

The English as a Second Language Program (ESLP) at Buffalo State is designed to assist international students whose first language is not English with the language skills necessary to succeed in their academic programs. This non-credit bearing program is particularly useful for students seeking conditional admission to Buffalo State as they prepare to enhance their language skills as measured by the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) and/or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

ESLP helps students with varying levels of English proficiency through coursework, interaction with native speakers of English, and individualized language practice.  The program consists of six levels of English language study, each offered during 15-week semesters (August-December and January-May).  Each level has 20 hours of class time per week, plus an additional 3 hours of small conversation group practice.
