The African and African American Studies (AAAS) Interdisciplinary Unit at Buffalo State College has the mission of maintaining, fostering, and promoting the study of the history, culture, and contemporary affairs of Africa and African people. The AAAS Unit houses an African and African American studies minor, incorporates faculty with expertise and experience in a wide range of scholarly areas, and organizes campus and community-wide programs and events.
The unit draws upon a diverse array of courses in Anthropology, Dance, Education, English, Foreign Languages, Geography, History, Music, Political Science, and Sociology that focus on Africa and the experience of African people on the African continent and in the Diaspora. Students acquiring an AAAS minor must complete 18 hours of coursework: 6 hours from specific required courses and 12 hours of electives.
In addition to providing African and African American Studies minors with a broad understanding of historical and contemporary African issues, the AAAS Unit sponsors conferences, speakers, events, and programs which educate the college and wider Buffalo community on issues relevant to African and African American Studies. The activities of the AAAS Unit contribute to the cross-cultural consciousness and awareness of the Buffalo State College Community.
