Track Athletes Willie Hordge and Toya Edwards
Monday, April 30, 2007

Track athletes Willie Hordge (Buffalo/ Forestbrook TX) and Toya Edwards (Brooklyn/ Clara Barton) were each three-time SUNYAC Champions over the weekend and were named the Buffalo State Co-Athletes of the Week. Hordge, a junior health and wellness major, won the 100-meter dash with an NCAA qualifying time of 10.56 and had a provisional qualifying time winning the 200-meter dash in 21.71. He also anchored the winning 4x100-meter relay team (42.34). Edwards, a freshman health and wellness major, also won the 100-meter (23.59) and 200-meter (26.47), and anchored the 4x100-meter winners (49.75). [more…]

Women's lacrosse player Stephanie Georgopoulos (Pt. Jefferson Station/ Comsewogue) was named the Buffalo State Athlete of the Week. The freshman scored twice in a 17-3 win against Morrisville and tallied a career-high six goals in a four-overtime heartbreaking loss at Geneseo. Softball player Jolene Banach (Cheektowaga/ Maryvale) was named the Buffalo State Athlete of the Week after leading the Bengals to a 5-1 week. The sophomore health and wellness major went 10 of 19 (.526) with four doubles, a homerun, eight RBIs and eight runs scored, as the Bengals split with Geneseo and swept RIT and Oswego. Canadian Loons Added to Database

Environment Canada has awarded Amy McMillan, assistant professor of biology, Buffalo State College, a grant of $9,765 (Canadian) to genotype 186 DNA samples from Canadian loons. McMillan will add the information to her database-the most extensive database of genotypes of this native North American bird species-and will provide Environment Canada with a summary of the genetic relationship between the birds from Canada and those from across the United States. "Most of our samples are from birds from the Northeast," said McMillan, "but we have samples from Alaska and the West Coast as well." [more…]

Softball player Aimee Fisher (Hamburg/Frontier) was named the Buffalo State Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week. Fisher, a sophomore biology major, threw a complete game two-hitter in a 7-0 win over visiting SUNYIT on Friday. Of the 21 outs in the game, Fisher retired 19 by way of strikeout. She is currently 7-0 with a 0.87 ERA and has 65 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings. [more…]
