The Teacher Education Unit at Buffalo State College is scheduled for a Spring 2008 accreditation review by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Seneca Nation Student at Buffalo State College Awarded $5,000 Scholarship

The Seneca Diabetes Foundation has awarded Lafayette Williams of Gowanda, N.Y., a $5,000 scholarship in recognition of his leadership skills, community involvement and Native American cultural awareness on and off campus at Buffalo State College. Williams, who is a sophomore, is interested in pursuing a career in health and wellness. "My nine nieces and nephews are my inspiration," said Williams, who was recently diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. "My studying at Buffalo State College is a wonderful example for them and all Native Americans who decide to pursue higher education." Williams was recently honored at the Annual Seneca Nation Diabetes Foundation Golf Tournament and Awards Dinner where Maurice John, president of the Seneca Nation of Indians, and Barry Synder, president of Seneca Gaming Commission, presented him with the scholarship. The Seneca Diabetes Foundation established the scholarship to assist a Seneca Nation student pursuing higher education in the health or social services professions. [more…]

Men's soccer player Dan Corti (Amawalk/Somers) was named the Buffalo Sate Athlete of the Week. The junior goalkeeper turned aside 16 of the 17 shots he faced this weekend as he guided the Bengals to a runner-up finish at the Johns Hopkins Classic. Corti made seven saves in a 2-1 win over DeSales, and had nine stops in his first collegiate shutout, a 0-0 draw against Washington & Lee. [more…] 

Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium Autumn Schedule

After a highly successful summer program, the Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium at Buffalo State College announces its autumn schedule for the public. Skies of the Harvest (a live presentation) will show patrons the current autumn night sky, explain why the days shorten toward December, and where to find the most notable stars and constellations. After a short break, the planetarium will then offer an additional show called, The Eye of Medusa, telling one of the most popular stories in Greek mythology. Following the programs, and weather permitting, the planetarium staff will present an opportunity to view the night sky first-hand with telescopic observation, featuring a 10" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope.  [more…] 

Rockwell Hall Hosts A Gathering or World-Renowned Klezmer Musicians

On Saturday, October 20th at 8:00 p.m., the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall will bring together thirteen of the world's most influential klezmer musicians for a concert and educational program inspired by the iconic 1958 photograph of jazz musicians "A Great Day in Harlem." This event is part of the Eldridge Street Project's Great Day Tour, a multi-faceted cultural, preservation, performance and documentation project to take place from October 12-22, 2007 across New York State. Conceived of and led by klezmer virtuoso Yale Strom, this notable gathering of musicians will introduce audiences to klezmer, the wedding and folk music played by Eastern European Jews. [more…]

Study of Buffalo River Takes New Direction

Buffalo State College has been awarded $308,980 in federal funds from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to advance research that is essential to the evaluation of remediation options for the lower Buffalo River, in particular selective removal of contaminated sediment. The junior wide receiver racked up 150 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns in the Bengals' 37-14 season-opening win at Morrisville.
