Exhibition: The Romance of Urban Decay
Time: Please Check Event Description
Location: Burchfield Penney Art Center
Fascinated by Buffalo's streets, harbor, railroad yards, and surrounding countryside, Charles Burchfield turned to a more realistic style-his works show optimism and a romantic interpretation of urban subjects. For him, life was a grand symphony filled with drama, despair, tragedy, and strength to overcome hardships. His personal endurance after the Depression spoke for feelings of commitment to appreciate and build upon a history and reconstruct a more noble and appreciative sense of the world.

Exhibition: Tony Sisti: Forgotten Regionalist
Time: Please Check Event Description
Location: Burchfield Penney Art Center
Over a long career, Tony Sisti (1901-1983) played a major role in the Buffalo art scene as a painter, collector, and patron of the arts. His gallery on Franklin Street had many exhibitions of local and international artists from 1938 to his death in 1983. Sisti, a classically trained artist, had some success as a portrait painter and painter of the regional scene. He was a friend and colleague of Burchfield as they were neighbors for several years. In 1979 Sisti made a major gift to the Burchfield Center which included paintings and drawings by Burchfield and his own works. This is the first major presentation of his work since the 1979 gift.
