The Useum is a hands-on gallery for individuals and families in the new Burchfield Penney. Camping in the Useum brings a summer campsite into the museum and celebrates the symbols of nature found in artwork throughout the galleries.

Clara Sipprell (1885-1975) was a successful portraitist and her still lifes, landscapes, and cityscapes were exhibited nationally and internationally. This exhibition features photographs from all phases of her career, including portraits of the artist by her family.

Exhibition: Heavy Metal: Cast and Welded Sculpture in the Collection

Metal sculpture from the collection will span more than a century, illustrating different techniques in production such as works cast in bronze or aluminum, welded and painted steel, and other forms of assemblage that incorporate other media. Artists on view include Charles Cary Rumsey, John V. House, Katrin Jurati, Alan Van Every, George Smith, Alex Bernstein, Arthur Doster, and Wes Olmsted.

Exhibition: Brunelleschi A Multi-Media Installation by Tony Conrad

The Burchfield Penney Art Center is pleased to present the North American premiere of Brunelleschi, Tony Conrad’s newest multi-media installation. The work was created for the Yokohama Triennial in the summer of 2008. Based on his research of renaissance architect and engineer Filippo Brunelleschi, Conrad will create an architectural light and sound installation in the Project Space at the Burchfield Penney.

First Thursday Concert: Josh Smith Performing Traditional Shakuhachi Music
Time: 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Location: Burchfield Penney Art Center
Born in Buffalo, Josh Smith now lives in Japan where he studies the shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute, under Okada Michiaki. He will be performing traditional Japanese Zen solo works known as honkyoku. Smith’s repertoire is from the creative style of honkyoku passed down from the Zen priest Watazumi Doso as well as the Kinko style of shakuhachi.
First Thursday programs at the Burchfield Penney are presented by Citizens Bank.

Edible Buffalo, Western New York's premier regional food publication, launches its fall film series with a screening of the food documentary FRESH. Sponsored by Buffalo Spree magazine and American Farmland Trust and in cooperation with the Burchfield Penney.
There will be a panel discussion following the film. Panel participants include Diane Held, Western New York Representative for American Farmland Trust, Kate Mendenhall, director of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York, Tom Tower, small scale fruit and vegetable farmer in Youngstown, NY, and Karen Agle from Eden Valley Growers in Eden, NY.

The Anne Frank Project

A free, day-long conference that will examine the world’s repeated desire to engage in genocide, and also encourage world-improvement through exploration of diversity and global issues.
The project is a continuation of the Theater Department’s thought-provoking 2006 production of The Diary of Anne Frank. The event will include lectures, workshops, and a candle lighting ceremony.

Faculty Choreographers' Showcase

Location: Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall
The Buffalo State College dance program boasts nationally and internationally recognized artistic directors, choreographers, instructors, and performers specializing in ballet, modern, dance appreciation, choreography, African American dance, jazz, and dance history, who bring a wealth of experience to their students.
Our faculty have toured, performed, and taught in Japan, Sienna, Italy, Germany, France, England, Italy, Denmark, Scotland, Holland, and Sweden, Amsterdam, Germany, and Scotland, and New York City.
At this performance, the dance faculty will showcase their world-traveled talents.

Sylvia L. Rosen and the Burchfield Penney invite the Buffalo State community to join us for the opening of Art in Craft Media 2009, the first craft art biennial to talk place in the new museum. The exhibition celebrates Western New York artists working in clay, glass, fiber, wood and metal.
The exhibition includes many artists from our Buffalo State community, including professors, alumni, as well as current students.
This exhibition is on view through January 3, 2010, in the East Gallery and the Sylvia L. Rosen Gallery for Fine Art in Craft Media.

Rooftop Poetry Club Workshop featuring Karen Lewis

How can the art of photography help us explore image making and 'imag'ination in poetry? The "Image Making with Poems and Photographs" workshop with Karen Lee Lewis will explore imagery beyond visual reproduction. Bring a photograph to the workshop that you’d like to write to, or choose one that inspires you from photographs the instructor will bring.
