Exhibition: Heavy Metal: Cast and Welded Sculpture in the Collection

Location: Burchfield Penney Art Center
Metal sculpture from the collection will span more than a century, illustrating different techniques in production such as works cast in bronze or aluminum, welded and painted steel, and other forms of assemblage that incorporate other media. Artists on view include Charles Cary Rumsey, John V. House, Katrin Jurati, Alan Van Every, George Smith, Alex Bernstein, Arthur Doster, and Wes Olmsted.

Exhibition: Brunelleschi A Multi-Media Installation by Tony Conrad

The Burchfield Penney Art Center is pleased to present the North American premiere of Brunelleschi, Tony Conrad’s newest multi-media installation. The work was created for the Yokohama Triennial in the summer of 2008. Based on his research of renaissance architect and engineer Filippo Brunelleschi, Conrad will create an architectural light and sound installation in the Project Space at the Burchfield Penney.

Exhibition: PatFarm An Intallation by Patrick Robideau

Sculptor Patrick Robideau transforms the Useum into two worlds-the earthy and dark environment above protects a subterranean underworld below where crawlspaces lead to the unexpected. Robideau's influence comes from science museum displays where objects are surrounded by simulated environments. Based on the tunnel systems constructed in ant farms, Pat Farm invites young explorers into a mysterious place of discovery.

Knuckle City Films presents a screening of their latest film The Experience. This documentary film explores the struggle to find identity often encountered by African Americans. The event will also include screenings of other Knuckle City Films Bad Fish and Benevolence. There will be a talk-back session with the filmmakers after the screening. M. L. Liebler is a internationally known and widely published Detroit poet, university professor, literary arts activist, and arts organizer. He is the author of 13 books including the award-winning Wide Awake in Someone Else’s Dream (Wayne State University Press 2008) featuring poems written in and about Russia, Israel, Germany, Alaska, and Detroit. Wide Awake received both the Paterson Poetry Prize for Literary Excellence and the American Indie Book Award for 2009. He has just been awarded, along with Maxine Hong Kingston and Junot Diaz, the prestigious 2010 Barnes & Noble/Poets & Writers 2010 Writers for Writers Award.
