In a relatively short span since its inaugural season in 1981, Buffalo State's football program has evolved into a national power. The Bengals have earned the respect of the authorities in Division III, as the team has been accustomed to appearing in the national top-25 polls, and played the strongest schedule in all of Division III in 2001, as voted by D3Football.com.
From 1990 through 2000, Buffalo State posted an 85-30 (.739) overall record, establishing itself as one of the top-two in all divisions across New York State. Included in that period were 10-consecutive postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Playoff berths, two ECAC Northwest Championships and one Northeast title.
