Following 10 seasons of club status including an ACHA national championship, the men's ice hockey team at Buffalo State was elevated to varsity status for the 1993-94 season. As a member of the SUNYAC, one of the nation's top Division III conferences, the Bengals annually play one of the more challenging schedules in the country. Buffalo State has steadily improved, and qualified for the conference playoffs for the first time in 2001-02. The Bengals have qualified for the playoffs in 2006 and 2007, and hosted their first home postseason game in 2007.
The Bengals play in the 1,800-seat Ice Arena, located at the heart of Buffalo State's campus. Opened in 1991, it is one of the premier arenas in Division III hockey. The Bengals have boasted players from more than 20 different states and provinces, from as far away as California and Alaska, supporting Buffalo State's visibility in the war to recruit top junior hockey players.
