Buffalo State made significant strides toward returning to prominence, posting back-to-back .500 or better seasons, their best record since 1984 at 11-5-2 in 2004. The Bengals also qualified for the SUNYAC playoffs in that season.

Beginning play all the way back in 1935, the men's soccer program has established one of the most storied traditions in Buffalo State athletics. The college has produced 22 All-Americans and a host of All-State and All-Conference performers, as well as sending a number of graduates to play and coach in the professional ranks. Today, the Bengals are members of the highly competitive SUNYAC and frequently finish among the league's top teams. Home contests are played on Coyer Field and practice facilities are housed on campus, while winter training opportunities are available at multiple nearby professional indoor soccer complexes.

The Bengals are currently coached by Rudy Pompert, who took over the men's team in 2000. A native of the Netherlands, Pompert played with the Dutch national college team from 1990 through 1993, and has participated in the sport at some of the highest international levels. He also worked with the world famous soccer club, AJAX Amsterdam and Dutch premier club, F.C. Utrecht. He first came to the Western New York area while he was goaltending in the 1993 World University Games in Buffalo, New York.
