Buffalo State's softball team is recognized as one of the premier programs in the Northeast. The Bengals have posted just one losing season since 1991, and have made seven NCAA playoff appearances. Buffalo State has also won three SUNYAC Championships and two New York State titles.

Buffalo State plays its home games on the new on-campus softball facility which opened for play for the 2003 season. The new park includes permanent fencing, a warning track, a scoreboard, and electricity.

Buffalo State has boasted five All-Americans, nearly 30 All-Region performers, over 20 players who earned All-State honors and more than 50 who have gained All-SUNYAC recognition. Among more than 15 players gaining All-ECAC status were three players who were named ECAC Player of the Year.
