After starting play in 1965, the women's basketball program was quick to adopt the winning ways of the men's team, as the Bengals have racked up more than 500 varsity wins since the team's inception. Since 1980, Buffalo State has posted just three losing seasons, and has claimed nine SUNYAC championships and earned 11 NCAA Playoff berths. Buffalo State's most recent title came in 2001-02, when it defeated Cortland and earned the right to open the Division III NCAA tournament on its home court.

Buffalo State plays its home games in the 3,500-seat on-campus Sports Arena, one of the finest facilities in all of Division III.
