Women's Volleyball has long been a part of athletics at Buffalo State. In 1946, forty women traveled to Brockport for a volleyball competition. The trip helped change the structure of women's athletics at Buffalo State College for the first time in a decade. State Teachers, as it was named then, defeated the University at Buffalo 20-15 on February 15, 1950. Since that time, the Bengals have established a tradition of winning as they have been rewarded with a number of SUNYAC post-season tournament appearances and athletes receiving All-Conference honors.

The Sports Arena serves as the home venue for the Bengals. With a seating capacity of 3,500, the arena can also be set up for two matches simultaneously with two scoreboards.
