Season Review
2007 REVIEW
Buffalo State was plagued by inconsistent play in all three facets of its game in its second season as a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), going 2-8 overall and 1-6 in league play.
After starting the season with a convincing non-conference win over Morrisville and a loss the national-power St. John Fisher, the Bengals opened conference play at Cortland. Despite squandering a 17-0 lead and dropping a heartbreaker, Buffalo State entered its homecoming as a confident team and dismantled visiting Kean, 35-16. The Bengals sputtered down the stretch, however, dropping the final six games of the season, including consecutive three-point losses to William Patterson and Western Connecticut.
Buffalo State was recognized with nine All-NJAC selections, including three First Team selections. Eight of the nine honorees were seniors. The lone underclassmen recognized was junior Greg Meyer (Lancaster/Lancaster) who led the NJAC with 887 receiving yards on 49 catches and scored a team-high 11 touchdowns this season. Joining Meyer on the First Team were fullback Bob Vesona (Depew/Depew) and cornerback Peter Nguyen (Buffalo/South Park). Vesona was second on the team with 276 rushing yards on 66 carries, and had 13 catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. Nguyen was second in the league with six interceptions, and had 61 tackles, including 46 solo stops and 10.5 tackles for loss, and an NJAC-best three fumble recoveries and three blocked kicks.
Quarterback Dan Aquilio (Depew/Depew) and defensive end Tom LaPann (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) were voted to the Second Team, and Dan Lopez (Lancaster/St. Mary’s), Luke Ingram (Levittown/MacArthur), Darryl Davis (Lancaster/Lancaster) and Scott Forster (E. Otto/Catt.-Little Valley) all received honorable mention recognition.
Aquilio threw for 1,882 yards and had 18 touchdowns. LaPann was third on the team with 71 tackles and led the way with 6.5 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss. Lopez rushed for a team-high 656 yards and scored seven touchdowns, despite missing the final three games due to an injury. Ingram had 30 tackles including 4.5 for loss and two fumble recoveries. Davis led the Bengals with 83 tackles and had one interception and four forced fumbles. Forster was second on the team with 78 tackles and had two interceptions and a team-best 12 pass breakups.
