Season Review

2007-2008 REVIEW

Buffalo State finished 8-15 overall and just missed qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in a decade and just the second time in school history.  Despite falling short of some of the team’s goals, there were plenty of highlights, however, including some key performances by several young players.

After topping the century-mark in the season-opening win over D’Youville, the Bengals started league play 1-0 with a home victory over SUNYIT.  League wins proved difficult to come by as the season progressed, as the Bengals struggled to play a complete 40 minutes and close out the opposition.  Buffalo State did add conference wins against Morrisville twice, Potsdam and Fredonia.

Senior Dion Mozelle (Rego Park/ Xaverian) finished the season as the team’s second leading scorer and top rebounder, and closed out his career as just the 18th player in the program’s 82-year history to score 1,000 career points.  Junior transfer Jamar Gray (Rochester/ Bishop Kearney) emerged as one of the league’s premier scoring threats, leading the Bengals with 15.7 points-per-game.  Also, junior point guard James Tyndal (Bronx/ Msgr. Scanlon) and sophomore center Antonio Samedi (St. Albans/ Queens Vocational) elevated their games and have Bengal fans already looking ahead to next season.

Although the Bengals will lose Mozelle and Neal Wilkins (Middletown/Middletown) to graduation, several key pieces will return next season including rookie big men Glenroy Carr (Amherst/ Sweet Home) and Antonio Speed (Buffalo/ East) who add size and athleticism.  With the addition of Fajri Ansari’s third full recruiting class, the Bengals will look to compete for a top spot in the SUNYAC in 2008-09.
