Students and faculty researching to make college better

By Kevin McGranahan

Interesting classes, creative activities and paid research are only some of the opportunities that the Office of Undergraduate Research provides to faculty and students.

The Office of Undergraduate Research, located in South Wing 510 at Buffalo State College, is a way to enhance student learning and faculty-student collaborations, says Office Director Jill Singer.
“Over 500 students and faculty have taken advantage of the opportunities provided by the office,” Singer says.

Some of the programs sponsored include:
• A summer program, which funds students $2,500 and faculty $1,000 to do their research. The Deadline for application is March 21.
• A program that provides travel opportunities for students to present the results of their research. Up to $400 will be given to assist students with their research. The Deadline has already passed for this year.
• A program for faculty to support the development of new courses and revisions of existing courses. The program awards between $750 to $1,000 will be given to support the faculty during the summer. Applications are available now.

“I think it is great that the college is paying for research on getting new classes. Maybe they will get new classes that will actually interest students,” says Buffalo State student Chris Poehler.

The activities provided by the office have started to attract national attention, Singer says.

The office is funded $75,000 by Buffalo State College and the Buffalo State Research Foundation.

“The college has identified undergraduate research as a priority area and has committed the resource to support high-quality undergraduate opportunities for students in all academic areas,” Singer says.

Singer says she has been involved with the undergraduate research at the national level for 10 years and the Buffalo State campus was interested in forming and expanding undergraduate opportunities, that is how the Office of Undergraduate Research got started.
