SABRE training sessions provided for students, faculty and staff

SABRE is back up and running for students, faculty and staff, just in time for the beginning of registration at Buffalo State College, but not without some problems.

The Computing and Technology Services office is offering training sessions for students, as well as faculty and staff. However, the first of the sessions, scheduled for April 6 and 7, were cancelled because SABRE was still down.

“There is hard copy material and documentation, but we decided it was ideal to have exactly what people would be using at registration time at the training sessions,” said Kari D’Amico, head of faculty and staff SABRE support at the Computing and Technology Services office (sabresupport@buffalostate.edu, or ext. 3434).

Judith Basinski, associate vice president of Computing and Technology Services, explained why SABRE was down.

“We were still making preparations for registration,” Basinski said. “The Registrar’s Office was still doing some analysis to the data that was out there to make sure all the time slots were assigned and all the sections were available the way they should be.” SABRE was running again by April 8.

This is the first time training sessions have been offered for students. The only training students had beforehand was a test drive option on the SABRE Web site (SABRE).

As of present, there is no trial run for students to try out the new changes to SABRE.

“We’re still working on the details for that, but it is in production right now and should be ready by registration,” Basinski said.

The training sessions were offered in order to show students, faculty and staff what the new features are and how to work them, as well as for new students and faculty who have not used the system yet.

“I think that people who are used to working with Web applications don’t need to go to the training sessions,” Basinski said. “Since there were changes, we wanted to provide a chance for people to ask questions.”

Two individuals attended the first faculty session on Monday, April 11- Linda Gleckel from the FASE dean’s office and Jennie Silverman, from the fine arts department.

“This session was so helpful. I love the new changes,” Gleckel said.

There were not many people registered for the first two sessions, said Basinski, but they are being rescheduled and there are more training sessions to come within the next couple of weeks. The dates are:
• Tuesday, April 19, 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. (for faculty and staff)
• Thursday, April 28, 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. (for faculty and staff)
The training sessions are held in CyberQuad 318, in Butler Library.

“We’re cooperating with the library through TASK, Technology and Application Support Cooperative,” Basinski said. “The library just opened an information commons and are trying to coordinate more campus support in that area, so this is one of the ways we are working with them.

“The Computing and Technology Services staff is working with the library staff and training them on SABRE.”

SABRE support for faculty and staff is based out of the Computing and Technology Services office, while student support can be found at the Registrar’s Office.

“On the faculty side, we don’t deal with complaints so much as problems and questions from newer faculty navigating the system and how to find their classes,” Basinski said.
