Buffalo state students to display artwork

By Jason Meholick

Buffalo State College, in order to provide its art students with a way to show off their art, will hold the 28th annual art education student juried exhibition. This exhibition starts April 19 and lasts until May 4 in the Upton Gallery.

Any art major could have submitted as many as three pieces to be put into the potential pool. From there every submitted piece was judged by a jury, which is formed mainly of art teachers.

The jury took into account:

  • time/effort put into the piece

  • size of the piece because of the limited space in the gallery

  • techniques used by the artist

  • originality of the piece

  • quality of the piece

Diane Koeppel, an assistant art professor at Buffalo State, said: “These decisions can become very hard to make because it is hard to judge a painting and a sculpture and then try to compare one to the other. This often makes picking the last piece for the show difficult.”

The students who do make the show realize it is a great opportunity because most art majors need to display their work.

Jessica Bell, an art major at Buffalo State, said: “I hope to get one of my works into any show because the only way to become a respectable artist is to establish a portfolio of your art that has been shown in displays.”
