Rocking out with The Feast

By Shauna Snover

Members of The Feast, a five-person band from Lancaster, describes themselves as a modern rock alternative band that fuses all of the greatest attributes of rock history.

     The Feast band members are:

  • Todd Kessner- vocals and acoustic guitar

  • Roger Cormier- guitar and vocals

  • Jason Durys- bass and vocals

  • Sean Martin- guitar and vocals

  • John Trehy- drums and percussion

The band’s sound can be described as a fusion of all kinds of music, with heavy influences from the 60s and 70s. The band cannot be defined as a single genre, Durys said. The type of songs the band can play range from rock to soul to fiesta to alternative to blues.

The Feast is currently working on its sophomore album, a follow-up to 2004’s “Strength.” While there is no set date for the release, it should be completed by the fall, Durys said.

The band is working under its own independent label, and practices and records at Martin’s house in Lancaster, which has a studio in the attic. The band members write all of their own music and lyrics.

The Feast also plays cover songs from their favorite bands and artists, such as:

Their sound can be compared to Widespread Panic, a successful underground rock and jam band from Georgia, Cormier said.

The band came together six years ago when Kessner recruited the other members from the Lancaster and Depew area.

“In six years, we’ve had no major problems,” Durys said. “The main elements came together and we’re all good friends.”

The Feast has played at numerous places and festivals throughout the Buffalo area, including:

Patrick Sportelli, a graduate student at Buffalo State College, has seen the band perform on numerous occasions.

“I really like their sound,” he said. “They have a local bar scene sound, but you can tell that they’re really talented at the same time. They always put a lot of effort into their shows.”

Every Thursday night band members can also be found at Desiderio’s in Lancaster, where Martin hosts an open mic night and jam session.

Besides working on the upcoming CD, the band is slated to play the Buffalo Original Music Festival in Colden on Aug. 19. For additional dates, check the band’s Web site.

The band ultimately wants to send a positive message to their fans.

     “Music is medicine,” Cormier said.
