On display in E.H. Butler library are pictures of local children whose smiling faces overrule their unhappy stories. The National Adoption Month Preview exhibit features photos of children, mostly teenagers, waiting to be adopted, taken by local, professional photographers.
The exhibit, brought to campus by the Heart Gallery of Western New York, runs from Nov. 1 through 30 and is located on the first floor of the library.
Pat Hartman of the Heart Gallery said the pictures really capture the spirit of the children, who are all currently awaiting adoption.
These people are looking for a forever family,î said Hartman, referring to a phrase she coined while working on the project.
The Heart Gallery is one of many nationwide that puts on events and programs similar to the exhibit happening at Buffalo State College.
The gallery was founded in 2001 in New Mexico by an adoption recruiter as a concept in how adoptive children are presented to prospective parents. The idea, to show children as individuals instead of just another photograph, spread throughout the United States and has landed in Buffalo.
The month long preview leads up to the main exhibit called Framing Faces, Finding Families. There is an opening reception 6 p.m. Feb. 9 at BSCs Burchfield-Penney Art Center, and the exhibit opens Feb. 2 and runs through the 28th.
Gail Daniels, assistant director of BSCs Center for Development of Human Services college relations group, is excited to bring the event to BSC, especially since there is so much ìcommunity involvementî to bring it together. The event will be open to the public and is free.
