Buffalo State College offers a variety of on-campus student organizations. There are over 50 organizations, and there is one for just about any student looking to get involved.
Being a part of an organization enhances the college experience by allowing students to meet and work with other students who share similar interests outside of the classroom.
“Since I joined RHA, I think I have come out of my shell and developed more as a person,” said Lajeanna Reddick, a member of Residence Hall Association.
By joining an organization, BSC believes students can:
- develop leadership/team building skills
- enhance social skills, meet new friends
- become socially, economically and politically aware
- become involved in the community
Faculty advisers and the United Students Government oversee the organizations. Leadership and teambuilding workshops are held, and presidents of each organization meet frequently to give reports. This is to ensure organizations receive adequate support and operate smoothly.
If students’ interests lay with issues concerning politics, entertainment, community service, or are looking to network with other people who may be on the same career path, there are organizations that can cater to those interests. They include Students for Peace, Residence Hall Association and the Student Union Board, just to name a few.
Some organizations focus on cultural issues. They strive to bring cultural acceptance, awareness and diversity by having programs that educate the campus community. Dinners, lectures, dances, fashion and talent shows are some of the ways in which the organizations reach the campus. These organizations include:
Students can find other organizations by checking out Buffalo State student organizations, or by taking a quick stroll through the Campbell Student Union during Bengal Pause to speak with other members.
Still not satisfied with the selections? Ashley Clarke, USG’s associate vice president suggests finding people who share the same interests and forming your own organization. Students can pick up a booklet that outlines the process from the USG Office.
“The college encourages and supports the formation of new organizations. It definitely adds something extra to our campus,” said Clarke.
