Buffalo’s Hospice: Where does the money come from?

By Melanie Brittain

Buffalo’s Center for Hospice and Palliative Care hosts several fundraisers every year to help curb the cost of medical expenses for families in Western New York.

Buffalo’s country station, WYRK 102.5 also participates in fundraising events with Hospice. It hosts a charity of the month. Last month the station took part in a flower sale fundraiser with the center.

“The Hospice Buffalo Spring Bouquet Sale is the largest fundraiser for the Hospice Foundation.  Over 500 community volunteers assist with the sale.” said Rosemary Collins, a public relations spokesperson for Hospice.

The 12th annual ArtVoice Fat Tuesday charity celebration swung into action Feb. 20th. The event raises money for the center, this year raising approximately $23,000 in the one-night event.

This is just one of the many fundraisers the center takes part in throughout the year.

“We do about three or four a month,” said Jean Marie Cieslica, Director of corporate and annual giving. “Our third party events raise about $100,000 to $120,000 a year.”

Cieslica said the Fat Tuesday event is one of their most successful fundraisers because of the large turnouts and community support.

Deb Ellis of ArtVoice said the paper had a hard time setting up the event with Hospice.

“They had a long, long debate about it,” she said.

“They were concerned about the liquor sponsors. It was a long application process,” she said.

Hospice also allows people to donate on a more personal level and in specific ways. These include:

Cieslica said these fundraisers are also effective and popular with the community.
