The Buffalo State College fashion department
is more than just a major.
Fashion and textile design students are getting out into
the making a difference and learning in the process. Through
fundraisers and fashion shows the students are making their
mark.
The department holds a fashion show every spring semester
modeling career fashions.
This year’s fashion show is on March 22, in the Assembly
Hall of the Student Union during Bengal Pause, from 12:30
to 1:30p.m. This year’s theme “Donald Trump,
‘You’re Hired,’ ” will explore interviewee
attire.
There will be student models who volunteer to show off what
would be acceptable clothing for an interview. The fashion
show is co-sponsored with the Career Development Center.
The department is also holding the “Take Back the
Night” clothing drive to help those less fortunate.
“It’s a clothing drive where everyone brings
in new or used clothes,” Colleen Coughlin, a senior
textile designs major, said.
Once the drive is over, members of the department bring
the donated clothes to The People of the Night, which is
local organization that assists homeless people.
A trip is held each semester alternating between New York
City and Toronto. On these trips the students visit fashion
related sites, such as The Limited Brand Headquarters in
NYC or a shoe museum in Toronto. BCS helps with funding
of the trips and 30 to 40 students get to go each semester.
“[We go to]...businesses, mills, museums…any
thing of interest…,” Brian Larkin, a senior
product development major said.
For those interested in the major, BSC’s fashion and
textile technology program is the only baccalaureate program
in Western New York that offers career preparation for the
global, multifaceted fashion industry with graduates working
in such companies as Abercrombie & Fitch, GAP Kids,
Talbots and Springs Industries, according to the BSC Web
site.
