Workshops to success offered to Buffalo State students

By Sandra Kelly

Students who want help in reaching their full academic potential may be interested in attending one of the three remaining Workshops to Success offered by the Academic Skills Center at Buffalo State College.

The classes are free to Buffalo State students. They are:
• Advanced review for the math competency exam (session 2) at 3 p.m. on Monday, March 14, in Rockwell 204
• Word Choices: Are You Using Dynamite or Firecrackers? at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, in Classroom Building B106
• The Write Stuff at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12, in Twin Rise 201

Thomas Renzi, coordinator of tutorial services at the Academic Skills Center, said these workshops have been offered for about three years now.

He said the center tries to advertise the workshops as much as possible. It relies on posters, word of mouth and instructors to inform students of the classes. Some professors even offer extra credit to students who attend one of the workshops.

“Our main objective is to improve students’ approach to learning, to offer success in their academic pursuits,” Renzi said.

Senior Jessica Printup attended the review for the math competency exam workshop, presented by Joan

Nicolette of the Academic Skills Center on March 2. She was the only student attending the class.

Printup expects to graduate in May. However, since she entered Buffalo State before 2000, she is required to take the math competency exam.

“I haven’t taken math in so long,” Printup said. “I was actually able to attend this one, my class was canceled today.”

The student hopes to learn what she needs to know to pass the math exam. If she does not pass the math exam her graduation could be postponed.

The workshops offered are not just for developmental math and English, they are an extension of some Buffalo State courses, said Renzi.

Word Choices: Are You Using Dynamite or Firecrackers, taught by Renzi, goes more in-depth with the use of language, he said.

“It is a basic awareness course to make students aware that words have specific meaning,” Renzi said.
Students interested in the workshops can call 878-4041 to register since space is limited to about 25-30 students, depending on which classroom is used, said Renzi.
