New exhibition showing at Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester

The Memorial Art Gallery is giving Buffalonians a reason to make the trip out to Rochester this summer.

The biennial 60th Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition will be on view at the Memorial Art Gallery July 24 through Sept. 18.

"Since 1938, the Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition has served as a springboard for many of our local artists who have gone on to garner national recognition," said Chiyo Ueyama, exhibitions assistant and the Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition coordinator.

Jurors Bruce Pepich and Daniel Strong, who are from out-of-state to ensure fairness in the judging, were selected by the gallery to come and chose which pieces of art should be included in the show.

The previous exhibition in 2003 was the most competitive ever: only 40 works by 31 artists were selected from 806 entries by 440 artists.
Ueyama said generous cash awards are presented by art clubs, corporations and art patrons. Most (eight of the 10 awards) are selected by the jurors, one by a docent representative, and one is given to the artist whose work receives the most votes from visitors during the first two weeks.

"Unpredictability is what makes juried exhibitions interesting. Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition is no exception. Among the exhibitors, you are likely to find students showing their work for the first time alongside established artists with professional gallery representation," explained Ueyama.

Price of admission:
• free to members, University of Rochester students, and children 5 and younger.
• general admission: $7
• children 6-18: $2
• college students with ID: $5
• senior citizens: $5
• reduced admission every Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m.: $2

This year, the exhibition is being sponsored by The Rochester Group, and is also being paid for by entry fees ($25 per entrant) and help from the University of Rochester.

"In mounting this exhibition, the gallery provides a respected and highly visible venue for regional artists, while offering the general public a diverse sampling of current talent in upstate New York," Ueyama said.

Carol Townsend, chair of the design department at Buffalo State College said that she plans to go and thinks its students should as well.

“The Memorial Art Gallery mounts quality exhibitions and this will be a collection of some of the finest work being created in the region,” Townsend said.

Anyone can enter from any of the 27 counties listed on the Web site, so the students, faculty and staff of Buffalo State can submit their art. The Memorial Art Gallery will continue to accept entries for the exhibit until April 25.
