With new funding from the state headed its
way, the Fulbright Scholarship Program is ready for another
year at Buffalo State College.
Awarded to senior and graduate students in
English, English education and communication programs, the
scholarships sponsor students to live in non-English speaking
countries and teach young children how to speak and read
the English language.
The additions in funding increased scholarship
numbers from 34 to 38. Funding was given to the program
through a grant in the SUNY system. The scholarship department
held an informational meeting to give students a look into
the program and what it offers.
“We tried to get students an inside
look into the scholarships and give them ideas of what they
can do in the program,” said Fulbright Director Janet
Maslowski. “I’m interested to see, with the
increase in funding, if more students plan on enrolling.
English professor Dr. Lisa Berglund told
the students about her experiences with the program.
“I had a wonderful time in the program,
experiencing new places and seeing new things,” said
Dr. Berglund, who visited Russia and Nepal in her travels
as a student in the mid-1980s. “There’s no end
to the great experiences the students can have in this program.”
Students who will be in their senior year
by November of this year, or have already graduated and
are in enrolled in graduate school at Buffalo State, are
eligible for the scholarships. Students who receive them
spend the following semester in many countries, such as:
• Spain
• Russia
• China
