The Non-Traditional Student Organization gives Buffalo State College students who have similar challenges not just a place to go — but places to go.
NTSO is an organization established for non-traditional college students. The organization is funded by United Students Government through the mandatory student activity fee.
On Nov. 27 NTSO will sponsor a tailgate party at Rich Stadium. BSC students will watch the Buffalo Bills play the Carolina Panthers.
Tonya Foy, president of NTSO, said students may purchase up to five tickets. Tickets are available to all BSC students, not just NTSO members.
Foy said tickets are $30 and include:
- transportation
- one game ticket
- tailgate party
- food (hot dogs, hamburgers, chili)
“We did this last year,” Foy said. “It was wonderful. We had an excellent time.”
Foy said colleges tend to be geared toward students who come straight from high school.
“Once you are older, you aren’t going to get the full college experience,” Foy said. “NTSO offers the college experience tailored to the needs of students who have outside responsibilities.”
Carla Young, 42, a full-time student at BSC majoring in pre-communication, said she is familiar with the struggles older students face.
“I usually get a blank look. Some people look at me like — at your age you should have already finished school,” Young said.
Young said she has thought about looking into NTSO but with school and full-time work she hasn’t had the time.
“I would like to see more activities and receptions on the weekends,” Young said. “I don’t join certain things because I can’t go to the functions.”
Future NTSO events include:
- a camping trip to Whispering Pines Dec. 16 through 18
- an upcoming banquet for NTSO members
- a trip to Toronto in the spring
