Fresh Fruits, Smiling Faces

This West Side market, located on 25 Grant St., has become a comfort spot for some of the area’s residents, including those who have moved out of the West Side.  Since 1961, the market has provided fresh fruits, vegetables, deli meats and cheeses to its customers, along with a healthy dose of old-fashioned customer service.

 

Buffalo friends are faster than FEMA

 

West side residents and  Buffalo State College students responded to the needs of their neighbors within a few hours after the disastrous snowstorm of October 13, 2006, but the U.S.  agency that has responsibility for emergencies did not get its Disaster Recover Centers set up in the city until November.

 

‘Hip Hop is a Revolution’ happens at Buffalo State College

 

“Hip Hop is a Revolution” is a event that started at Buffalo State College in 2000 as a way to increase voter turn-out and educate students and members of the Buffalo community about politics, said Eric Walker, one of the co-organizers of the event and a community organizer for PUSH Buffalo.

Buffalo State’s men’s basketball team will be integrating 11 new bodies into the program during the 2006-07 season.   

Students’ community work to be honored
On Dec 5th students, faculty and community partners will be honored by the Buffalo State Volunteer Service Learning Center for the work they have done in the community in a ceremony during Bengal Pause. The ceremony is called the celebration of service and will be held in the Burchfield-Penney Art Center.

Asthma related problems in the West Side
According to research involving traffic emissions, the University at Buffalo found that residents who live nearby the U.S- Canada border are more susceptible to asthma due to border travel.

A new arts center for Western New York  
Residents of Buffalo’s Richmond Avenue neighborhood met on Saturday, Nov. 11, with board and staff members of Alleyway Theatre Inc. in downtown Buffalo to develop new strategies for securing the balance of funding necessary to complete the $1.5 million Upper West Arts Centerproject, which will transform a former church building into a multi-use arts facility at Richmond Avenue and West Ferry Street.

The Food Bank of Western New York provides food to 500 food pantries year-round. The CEO and president of the food bank said he appreciates all the donations, but now are in need of some goods more than others.

Burchfield-Penney celebrates 40th with special exhibit
Charles Burchfield, who was a famous painter from the 60s, opened the Burchfield-Penney Art Center 40 years ago on Dec. 9, 1966. In his honor the Burchfield-Penney Art Center is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a special exhibit of his work.

Complete Circuit tries to better the community.
