This fall, Rachel Fitzsimmons will discover her whole life has been a lie.
Fitzsimmons, a character in the Buffalo State College production of “Reckless,” will discover what the lie is in the production that will be performed in the Flexible Theater (http://www.buffalostate.edu/theater/facilities.xml) this October.
Before going to bed Christmas Eve, her guilty husband informs her that he has taken a contract out on her life, and that she must flee the house immediately because her killer is on his way. Rachel is thrown into a series of chaotic events, entering into a series of relationships with different kinds of people who all hold a secret.
Susan White is the stage manager for “Reckless.”
“It’s a borderline absurdist concept, we have to suspend the disbelief of the audience,” White said. “(The absurdity) makes it work because the characters are so disillusioned.”
She said the play will also extend into the audience during certain scenes. This will happen, specifically, in the first scene when Rachel climbs out of her bedroom window to escape her killer, and during a game show scene where the play’s audience will double as the game show’s audience.
The scenes will be short and fast-paced. White said there is only one pause during the 28 scene changes in the play. Otherwise, the play’s crew is constantly bringing things out between scenes, and the audience will see the prop and character changes throughout the performance.
“It’s (Rachel’s) journey going from one space to the next,” she said.
Ana Lugo is a senior at BSC and plays Rachel.
“It’s unlike any other play I’ve read or performed, she said. “Characters like this don’t come along very often, it’s really cool to play this. It’s worth all of the hard work.”
Lugo also said her biggest challenge was staying true to telling both the dramatic and comedic sides of the story.
“Reckless” will be presented by Casting Hall Productions (www.buffalostate.edu/theater/castinghall.xml) and the theater department at BSC. It will run from Oct. 12 to 16. It will be directed by Susan Forbes, an Empire State College faculty member who will be making her Buffalo directorial debut with “Reckless.”
“It’s a journey like ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ through the life of Rachel Fitzsimmons,” Lugo said. “Get ready for a roller coaster ride.”
