Will the Game Room have a future?

The United Students Government Game Room may be in trouble, with some Buffalo State College students predicting a questionable future for the facility.

The Game Room (http://www.buffalostate.edu/studentlife/x586.xml) opened in the former bookstore space of the Campbell Student Union in the fall of 2004.  The facility began experiencing problems last year with vendor contracts, according to United Student Government (http://ipa.buffalostate.edu/~usg/contact.htm) Senate meeting minutes.  Also, more money was coming out than was coming in, so USG voted not to sign a contract for the Game Room for this year.

The student government has created a Game Room Committee to address the facility’s problems and what will be done with it in the future.  Senator Aaron Groover and Vice President for Sports and Recreation Kevin Buckley have been appointed to the committee.

Groover said that the purpose of the committee is to improve the entertainment and feel of the Game Room, and also to get students to go down there.

“I expect the attendance of the Game Room to skyrocket once we implement a new design,” he said.

Groover said that student involvement is important to the facility’s future.

“People should come and voice their opinions if they are concerned, everyone’s concerns will be addressed,” he said.

The committee meets at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesdays in the USG conference room on the fourth floor of the Student Union.

Buckley could not be reached for comment.

Students say many of the problems with the Game Room are because of its hours and the absence of promotion for the facility.

Senior Jamie Panaro said that she has gone down to the game room on multiple occasions and it has been closed each time.

“I went down there with the College-Based Training Service, but it was closed.  Whenever I go down there, it’s always closed,” she said.

Freshman Joe Losecco said the Game Room needs more than one sign to attract those who have never been there and also to attract those who have a busy schedule.

Junior Christina Bailey also said the Game Room needs more promotion.  She said this could happen if USG had more activities in the Game Room, and also held more programs and events there.

“I’d go down there in between class to relieve some stress if they had karaoke there,” she said.

The Game Room could also be made better if it were brighter or turned into a lounge, said Dan Bolden, a junior.

“They should put in more lights to make it more inviting, have more signs and more color than just a plain white room,” Bolden said.
