The fifth annual Student Research and Creativity
Celebration here at Buffalo State College is set to go off
at the end of April. The celebration provides a forum for
undergraduate students to present their research, scholarly
and creative activities.
Jill Singer, an earth science professor, runs the event.
She says the celebration has a lot to offer such as student
presentations.
“Many students demonstrate their talents and scholarly
accomplishments by giving talks, reading papers and preparing
posters. Other students give musical and theatrical performances,”
Singer said.
In years past, one project ended up with students and faculty
racing around on campus in a mini-Baja vehicle.
“Two years ago, a group of students from the technology
department demonstrated their mini-Baja vehicle that they
were entering into the national competition. Students and
faculty had a chance to race around the Student Union quad
in the vehicle and test its maneuverability and speed,”
Singer said.
She likes the idea of celebrating research and creativity
and says it’s a good place to discover a classmate’s
academic accomplishments.
“First, the celebration is a great opportunity to
acknowledge the academic achievement of our students and
acknowledge the faculty and professional staff that serve
as mentors. Second, the experience is essential for students,
whether they plan to go directly into the job market or
continue their education at the graduate level,” Singer
said.
Kristin Giannelli, a junior public communications major,
has never heard of the research and creativity celebration
but says, she look forward to finding out more about it.
“It’s important to celebrate peoples new ideas,”
Giannelli said.
