Commencement ceremonies go high tech

By Mary Taylor

This semester, commencement ceremonies will include the high-tech addition of live video streaming, making it possible for anyone with access to a computer to view graduation without the hassle of crowds and campus parking.

All anyone needs is a computer and QuickTime player to view the Web cast, which will be streamed live May 10. Those without QuickTime can download it here. System requirements are a Pentium processor-based PC or compatible computer, at least 64MB of RAM and Windows 98/NT/Me/2000/XP.

Reaction to this high-tech addition has been positive.

“I wish they had that when I graduated,” said Beth Dressler, class of 2002. “With the limited number of tickets available it’s hard to choose who gets a ticket and who doesn’t. With the video feed everyone can watch the ceremonies.”

Steve Jordan, Buffalo State College student said: “It sounds like a great idea, but I’m a little nervous about how well it will work. It’s a step in the right direction though.”

“It’s perfect for older people who might not be able to attend.” said Casey Eschberger, Buffalo State junior. “It sounds like it might be a solution for anyone with a grandparent in a nursing home. They could watch the ceremonies on a computer.”

Graduation ceremonies are scheduled for May 10 at the following times.

  • 10 am - baccalaureate ceremonies
  • 2 pm - baccalaureate ceremonies
  • 6 pm - master's hooding and certificate of advanced study ceremony
