Philip Auman, a consular for the Career Development
Center (CDC) here at Buffalo State College, held a lecture
this past April 3 in the Science Building on how to get
a job out of town. He emphasized the importance of a good
cover letter and networking.
The first thing to do, said Auman, is to figure out what
exactly it is you want to do. Then figure out who is hiring.
He says looking on Web sites such as Monster.com and Yahoo
is one way, but networking works best.
“Everyone you know should know you are looking for
a job,” Auman said.
He also says the cover letter will have more of an effect
on the person who is doing the hiring than the actual resume
itself.
“The cover letter demonstrates your ability to communicate.
It illustrates more of your personality than does the resume,”
said Auman.
Shannon Jordan is in graduate studies for a master’s
in public health and community education. She has plans
to go out West where, she says, there are more jobs for
people in her field.
“I’m glad that I was told about the CDC and
what it offers, because I never used it before. So I’m
glad to find out about the different avenues that I can
use, and people that I can contact, and other methods for
a job search,” Jordan said.
The CDC is in 306 Grover Cleveland Hall. Auman says his
office puts their services into three different categories:
- to help undecided students choose direction for
themselves
- job searches for graduating students
- graduate school researching
