Botanica
By Katrina Whitlow

The humorous and heartfelt play, “Botanica,” written by Dolores Prida, will be on stage at the Ujima Theater at Theater Loft - 18k at 545 Elmwood Ave. The play is directed by Rolando Gomez and the performance will run until April 18.

“Botanica” which has run in Spanish for nine years as the resident school production at New York's Repertori Espanol, is a funny and often sarcastic look at a culture that has been uprooted from Puerto Rico. The play focuses on the important cultural contributions women have provided in the survival of Spanish culture throughout history. The production will appear in both English and Spanish.

“The Racies Latino Theater Company sponsored the play and this is the second year that we have run the play at the theater loft,” said stage manager Shelia M. Lopez.

“Botanica” is based on three generations of Puerto Rican women in East Harlem New York. They all struggle with trying to keep their identities and as well understand one another. The story line of the play revolves around Millie, played by Victoria Perez, returning home after her graduation from a private business college. Millie has lied to her mother, Anamu, played by Zorenma Mercedes and doting grandmother, Dona Geno, played by Eveelyn D. Vasquez, to keep them from attending the ceremony.

Millie also plans to move to lower Manhattan and work in a bank, where she can make something of herself in the real world, her grandmother sets out to convince her that her place is at home. Prida allows Millie to create her own life throughout the play and still experience a reawakening about her heritage.

“The play was hilarious, even though I'm not Spanish, I could relate to the theme because being in touch with your culture is very important,” said audience member Benjamin Schultz.
