The observance of Palm Sunday
on April 13 began the holiest time of the year
for Christians and marked the beginning
of Holy Week.
Here at Buffalo State College, Masses
were celebrated and services held in accordance with the
week’s events.
“Holy Week encompasses the holiest time of the year.
It includes three holy days from Holy Thursday
through Easter Sunday morning,” said Jon
Neureuther, Newman Center campus minister.
The Church
of Assumption located on Amherst Street
held a Good Friday service at 3 p.m. Mass was celebrated
on Holy Saturday at 7 p.m. and Easter Sunday
at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Neureuther said that the significance of each day was:
- Holy Thursday – the Last Supper with
Jesus and the apostles and the institution of the Eucharist.
- Good Friday – the death of Jesus
- Easter Sunday – the Resurrection
“Holy Thursday is a solemn occasion,”
Neureuther said. “The washing of the disciples’
feet emphasized Jesus’ service to humanity and how we
are invited to serve others.”
According to Neureuther Good Friday marks
the death of Jesus and is traditionally a time to meditate
and reflect on what Jesus was going through on the cross.
Holy Saturday, according to New
Advent Catholic Encyclopedia, is a day of joy and sadness
intermingled because it is the close of Lent.
The Newman Center hosted a Good Friday service at 2 p.m.,
Easter Vigil Saturday at 8 p.m. and two Easter Sunday Masses
celebrated at 9:30 and 11:30.
