By Jordan Iannuzzelli

Renowned renaissance woman Maya Angleou is coming to Buffalo State College May 3 to speak about, “ Poetry: When Words Unite .”

The speech will be in BSC's Performing Arts Center in Rockwell Hall .

Tickets can be purchased at the PAC box office in Rockwell hall, or by calling 878-3005. Prices are:

  • $20 for the general public
  • $10 for BSC faculty and staff
  • one free for BSC undergraduate students with school ID card

According to Angelou's official Web site, www.mayaangelou.com , she has received numerous awards and honorary degrees . In 1993, Angelou became only the second poet to ever write and recite original work at a presidential inauguration when she did it for President Bill Clinton. Robert Frost was the first poet when he read his work in 1961 at John F. Kennedy's inauguration.

Black Active Minds of BSC is the main group that spearheaded the effort to bring Angelou to speak. Franchelle Hart is the president of BAM and originally proposed the idea to bring Angelou to BSC.

“I have always been a big fan of her work,” said Hart. “Everyone in BAM was thrilled with the idea.”

Hart also said that Angelou's “Poetry: When Words Unite” is meant to bring people together and to act as an “agent of unification.”

“She is going to show how people can use poetry and literature…to unite all different types of people,” said Hart.

When asked how much Angelou would be compensated for speaking at BSC, Hart said that she didn't want to say.

Other groups sponsoring the event are:

  • Student Union Board
  • United Students Government
  • African-American Student Organization
  • Commuter Counsel
  • Political Science Office
  • Students for Peace
  • Orientation Office
