Women and War Teach In at Student Union

By Steven M. Jacobson

Buffalo State College and the Feminist Action Network (FAN) will host a teach in on war and effects on women.

Not to be confused with an anti-war protest, the goal of the teach-in is to let the students know how women are struggling during times of any war according to student Kati Tastrom and assistant professor Dr. Amitra Hodge.

“This is good because it is not for or against the war,” said Dr. Hodge. “It gives us information on what happens to the citizens”

Not focusing on specifically the current war on Iraq, Dr. Hodge and Tastrom want to discuss what can happen to women in any country during war, and what will happen after war. During this teach-in, their main focus during will not be on female solders but citizens of these countries, the defenseless.

The first topic they wish to discuss is the treatment of women:

  • the raping of women by solders.
  • the treating of women in refugee camps.

There are many other things to consider with women and war. The aftermath of war can devastate women. When war ends a country goes into a state of debt. This means social security and health benefits will be cut. This has the following effects on women:

  • Women’s responsibility for child care, health, and family welfare are increased.
  • Women’s wedges and buying power are greatly reduced or sometimes worthless.

“Hopefully this teach-in will give us a glimpse of what is happening to women around the world,” said Dr. Hodge
