There are three good reasons why it is
a good idea to get an internship
on summer breaks, said Stephanie Zuckerman-Aviles,
the director of the Career Development Center here at Buffalo
State College:
- internships are good resume builders
- an internship is a good way to find out
whether you like the field you have chosen or not
- an internship is a good place to network
and to find career opportunities
“When you are done with school and
you are getting ready to go into graduate school or to find
a job, the first thing they look at is, how did this person
spend their summers,” said Zuckerman-Aviles.
It doesn’t matter if you went away for the summer to
travel or to study abroad. It doesn’t matter if you
were a waiter, a clerk or if you worked rides at Darien Lake,
she said.
“Employers just want to know that you worked over the
summer, that you didn’t bum around, she said.”
Franklin Quito, a senior mechanical engineer major, says he
plans on getting his career started this summer designing
infrastructures.
“Maybe cars, engines, stuff like that,” Quito
said.
First Quito is hoping that the economy will improve, then
he plans to get a job or an internship at General Motors Corps.
or Ford.
“Hopefully I’ll get one. An internship would be
nice,” he said.
During the summer the CDC will work more on an individual
basis rather than running programs for numerous students.
“If people want to go to graduate school and they want
to meet with counselors, our full counseling staff is here.
We do run our job search workshops, we do our resume review
sessions and people can stop into have their resumes reviewed,”
Zuckerman-Aviles said.
