The Weigel Health Center sponsored the Best Dressed Breast Fashion Show. The program emphasized the importance of breast cancer while raising awareness among Buffalo State students. The program was a collaboration between Student Affairs and Academic Affairs.
Tammy Regret, coordinator, said, “In order to support an important cause, it is critical for Student Affairs and Academic Affairs to have a collaborative relationship.”
The program was planned by the Choosing Healthier Options in College Environment Successfully (CHOICES) graduate interns Jackie Palmieri, Regnet and Damian King, health center client educators. In February, BSC students started planning this event. The idea came from the University of Oregon.
Students from Dr. Amitra Hodge's women's studies class, health center staff, and members of the community participated in the program.
The program coordinators hoped that students would become more aware of breast cancer and doing so, learn who is at risk and about prevention. Palimieri said, “by doing this fashion show students can engage into active learning, which is important for the holistic development of students.”
The theme of the show was pink and white. The colors symbolize breast cancer and so the audience of 35 to 40 people wore ribbons, pins and buttons in those colors given to them at the show.
Nick Howard, student/model, said: “The night was successful and the models and coordinator look forward to next year. The audience seemed interactive and supportive of the event.”
From Steven Bales, who attended the show, “It was a good idea to have a fashion show that attracted people to come out and become more informed about breast cancer.”
On the program's pamphlet, special thanks were given to the community, students and staff who supported and contributed to the show's success. Stores from the Elmwood Shopping District donated clothes for the event.
“This fashion show promotes BSC--it gives room for the community and student relation,” said King.
