Transfer students taking radio by storm
By
Ivory Miller Wondering what the latest controversy, gossip, fashion trends, music and who the best-looking people are? If so, tune in to the Buffalo State College campus radio station, WBNY 91.3 FM , every Monday night at 8, and listen to Hamilton “Decaf” Jean-Baptiste and Audilong “Mr. A.K.A” Dufresne tell it all.
Jean-Baptiste and Dufresne are both transfer students who believe in putting themselves in the spotlight to achieve their career goals. Their show deals with various humorous and controversial topics that they see among other students. They don't deal with one specific topic, but each week they have their own top five consisting of the most attractive people on campus.
“For guys it would be the top five females and for girls it would be the top five guys. We just do it to get attention, not to start any conflicts around school. It's just for fun,” said Jean-Baptiste.
Jean-Baptiste and Dufresne came up with their radio personality names in a very unique way. One looked to a Starbuck's coffee cup for inspiration, and the other had too many names to choose from.
“I got ‘Mr. A.K.A' because I had many a.k.a's,” said Dufresne. “I used to listen to a lot of reggae so if you listen to, like, Bounty Killer, he would come on as Rodney Price, a.k.a Bounty Killer, a.k.a, a.k.a, a.k.a, so I liked the way that it sounded.”
Not only do these students want to provide entertainment, they also want to provide other students a way to put themselves out there. They did just that for one of Buffalo State's football players, Lydel Burch, a.k.a Moka Blast , who is a rapper.
Jean-Baptiste and Dufresne are also members of the football team, and are looking forward to winning homecoming next semester. Until then they want all students to do as they do and become recognized on campus.
“I think you just have to go out there and sell yourself, explained Jean-Baptiste. “Not in a prostitution kind of way, but you have to go out there and meet people. Don't be shy, don't be anti-social just go out there and do things.”
“You have to make connections so when you're like in class, you never know, you might be sitting right next to Bill Gates or somebody,” said Dufresne.
