One Buffalo State College track record was broken, and one runner had his seasons best. The BSC men's and women's track and field teams competed in the SUNYAC Championship at SUNY College at Cortland as they brought back with them a total of six titles.
The men's team finished third out of nine with 84 points. Sophomore Justin Muise captured two championships. In the 400-meter dash, he finished first with a time of 48.89, and in the 400 hurdles at 54.56. Crossing the finish line at 15.21 in the 100m hurdles, Muise missed having three titles by .08 seconds. Jonathan Frechette of SUNY Cortland got the win with a time of 15.13.
Freshman Ken Ciolek also had a successful day. Ciolek took home a pair of wins at the championship. He took the win and a season's best in the javelin with a distance of 54.66m. With a 13.20m leap, Ciolek also won the triple jump.
With 29 points , the women's team finished eighth out of nine teams. Adding 10 points to her team, freshman Mercedes Roper crossed the finish line first in the 100m dash with a time of 12.90.
Also adding another 10 points were the members of the 4x100m relay team. Linda Williams, Roper, Keyia Thompkins and Desi Gibson finished with a time of 49.12. They broke their previous BSC record of 49.65 that was achieved at the Emory Classic at Georgia Tech this past year. This win came despite the injury of Williams, who ran with an achilles strain. The team needs a time of 47.8 to make it to nationals as they have two meets left to accomplish it.
“It was really windy outside, so we were all running against the wind,” said Williams. “We ran pretty good…I don't think my injury affected our time…I just need to be extra healthy for our upcoming meets.”
Williams, Gibson and Thompkins all went to Edison Tech in Rochester together and ran the 4x100m. Williams stated that the team had a 47.8 but got disqualified because they went outside the zone. But with the speed of Roper, their expectations of nationals are high.
“We really want to go to nationals, have fun and to do well,” said Williams. “We need to spend more time practicing our baton reaches. Practicing will help to lower our time.”
