Have you been struggling to get a grip on
one of your courses this semester? Instead of sitting in
class wondering what exactly your professor is saying, maybe
it’s time to head down the Academic Skills Center
in South Wing 330.
The center is offering a tutoring service to help students
who may be struggling in one or more of their classes, and
need some extra help with math, English, history, and a
variety of subjects that tutors can help in.
According to Thomas Renzi, Coordinator of
the tutorial service, it offers scheduled tutors throughout
the day that have expertise in certain fields with some
of them having more than one area that they can tutor in.
“We offer help in a variety of subjects
but not all of them and we are limited by the number of
tutors that we have,” said Renzi. “Any student
that needs help just simply needs to call up our receptionist
at 878-4041, she finds out what subject matter they are
interested in and we can find a tutor that fits their subject
matter and we can just fit them in. Students can feel free
to come up on their own if they feel they need help in a
certain subject, there are no appointments for referral,
so they can come up and we’ll set them up with a tutor.”
There are 10 tutors who are available at different
times for help from Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.
- 4:30 p.m. All of the tutors are professionals, not students,
and the have prior experience in tutoring and remedial help.
A schedule is provided on the Academic Skills Center web
site. Students can find times when tutors are available
with their particular needs. If the subject a student needs
is not listed, the tutoring service may be able direct him
or her to a tutor through a specific department.
“The service is totally free, and is
wide open to students,” said Renzi. “This semester
we are trying to offer longer hours because we’ve
found many of the students coming for help have been more
non-traditional students, but our main thrust is to be available
for all students and give them any support they need to
succeed.”
“I think it’s a great thing to
have for students,” said Buffalo State student Gail
Fronckowiak. “I actually went to them for some help
last year, and they really helped me get a hold of some
problems in math. I think the more students are informed
of this service, the more they would use it, because it
seems like it is somewhat unknown.”
