Curtain open for students interested in the performing arts

By Christine Ball

Many students struggle to decide on a major that is right for them when they first come to Buffalo State College. Students who are looking for a way to express their creativity or become the star they may have always wanted to be, the performing arts department may be a perfect place to start.

“The arts give us a way to look at the world in a different, creative way,” said Donna McCarthy, associate professor and chair of the performing arts department. “Listening, performing or watching reaches inside and makes us think at the same time.”

The department offers four majors:

  • Theater
  • Music
  • Music Education
  • The arts.
A major in the arts is an interdisciplinary program that lets a student combine different talents, such as dance, design, fine arts, music and theater. Minors include music, dance and theater.
There are 120 students currently majoring in the performing arts at Buffalo State.

Some performances the department has in store this semester are:
  • Tartuffe, showing April 9-13th
  • The BSC Singers, Chamber Choir Concert at 3 p.m. April 27 in Assumption Church located at 435 Amherst St.
