New arrangement means new opportunities for students at University College

By Jan Wopperer

University College has recently made its services more convenient for Buffalo State College students by consolidating offices from around campus into South Wing .
"It was a reorganization as well as a creation. We're trying to be a place where students come for advisement, for advice when they're in trouble, when they're trying to figure out their lives and what they want as a major,” says Dean of University College Janet E. Ramsey.
Faculty in Twin Rise and South Wing are always happy to help first-year students, those who are undeclared , who need academic advisement or financial assistance, and those who are interested in international programs.
Marie M. Ferraro, coordinator of Academic Advisement , says: "It's a warm environment. We have students coming back all the time to tell us everything they're doing, and we guide them along their path academically." The office in South Wing 110 is open to any student who needs help registering.
Computer labs and study areas, as well as tutoring and advisement services are now available in one building. A new lounge area for first year commuters across from the Dean's Office is currently being remodeled.
Twin Rise offices include:
- The Dean's Office
- Academic Standards
- First-Year Programs
- Intellectual Foundations
Each floor in South Wing has its own designation:
- First Floor: Academic Advising and Interventions
- Second Floor: SSSP and C-STEP
- Third Floor: Support Programs and Skills Center, Computer Lab
- Fourth Floor: International Programs and Offices
- Fifth Floor: Academic Opportunities, EOP Computer Lab, STAR
- Sixth Floor: EOP Counselors
- Seventh Floor: EOP Resource Center and Director's Office
"I think what's new is the presentation. We want to essentially roll out the red carpet for the people who come over here and have a greater sense of connection to the college. I'd say that's the main element. The message we went to send is, 'You are home,'" commented Roswell Park, the director of academic support programs and coordinator of individualized studies.
. The staff of Twin Rise and South Wing have made it their mission to help students prepare for the future and feel at home on campus. They are waiting for more students at Buffalo State to come take advantage of the services offered to them.

Jery Augustin, a sophomore, frequently visits South Wing. "I go to the sixth floor because they help you with class work and homework. They look out for you. I like that."
