Could the next Marv Levy, Joe Torre or Vince
Lombardi be among us? With new revisions to the coaching
minor at Buffalo State College, the chances of the next
great coaching legend walking amongst us just got better.
Already the biggest minor on campus with 75 students according
to Dr. Stephen Schwartz, coordinator of the department,
revisions were necessary in order to handle the amount of
students enrolled in the coaching department.
“The courses listed before were not accessible to
all students,” said Dr. Schwartz, “More classes
needed to be added in order to give students more options
and to get them the classes they need to graduate on time.”
Under the current structure of the minor, students need
nine credit hours in health and coaching courses to receive
their New York State Coaching Certification, while 18 credits
are needed for a degree in coaching, with classes in injury
prevention, kinesiology or social behavior, and two classes
in a specific sport, such as football, baseball or track
and field needed to fulfill the minor.
Said prospective student Steven Moore, “ The changes
definitely makes the program more appealing to prospective
students.”
Along with changes to the coaching minor, new classes were
added in other majors, such as:
• hand knitting (FTT 200)
• construction fundamentals (FTT 100)
• designing knit apparel (FTT 329)
• introduction to sports facilities administration
(HEW 203)
• ethical consideration in sports administration (HEW
380)
