Buffalo State College students can find a home away from home at the University College Advisement Center .
Josie Adamo is the coordinator of academic developmental courses and academic support programs in South Wing 310 and she takes her job very seriously.
“I will have a student come and sit here and we'll talk. I won't even talk about courses. I want to know who that person is. I want to know who they are. That's my idea of advisement. And maybe that's why I have students who still come back to see me.”
Adamo and Marie M. Ferraro are advisers in the Academic Center sit with students to help them with Degree Navigator and Error! Hyperlink reference not valid. . They will also be happy to discuss GE2K , review their Audit Reports or help students with any other academic concerns. The Academic Advisement Center is now open until 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday for those who need assistance.
"We help many first-year and undecided students with registration and decision-making ... help them make a decision on a major," said Ferraro.
Adamo said: "A lot of students say, ' I don't know what I like' and I ask, 'Well, what don't you like' and we work from there."
Registration begins April 13 , so the best time to visit the office is now , rather than later. Student should bring a print-out of their audit sheet and also have an idea of what they need help with when they go to be advised.
More students come in for help as the first day of registration comes closer in order to be prepared when they have to register for the classes they need.
"There usually is a rush on the last day. So we really try and get them enough information so they do come in early ," said Adamo.
The Academic Advisement office at South Wing 110 has a welcome sign and hours listed on the window next to the entrance. There is a waiting area, a window that lets a lot of light in and three computers with desk lamps and swivel chairs to sit on while students are working with the advisers on their courses.
“Computers here are paid for by technology fees, so you know where your money is going in this department,” said Ferraro. There is no fee for advisement given and sessions typically last anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes.
Students can call 878-5223 to make an appointment or take their chances and stop in. If Ferraro and Adamo are busy, their secretary will schedule an appointment.
Currently, Adamo's hours are:
8:30 - 4:00 p.m. , Monday through Friday.
Ferraro's hours are:
10:00 - 6:00 p.m. , Monday through Thursday.
