Burchfield-Penney Art Center holding Cuban-American Art programs and events

The Burchfield-Penney Art Center is featuring a Cuban-American Art exhibition through April 3. The events consist of curator talks about art and what they do, book signings by authors and family workshops, such as face painting. The art center is located in Rockwell Hall at Buffalo State College

The head of marketing and public relations for Burchfield-Penney, Kathleen Hayworth, says the events are free for Buffalo State students and staff , $5 for adults and $3 for children.

Remaining events/programs are at Burchfield-Penney unless noted otherwise.

•  March 5 at 2 p.m., lecture from Pablo Menendez, the leader of the Cuban band, Mezcla and a cultural anthropologist.

•  March 10 at 7 p.m. , artists talk with Errol Daniels and Jorge Guitart. Daniels is a photographer.

•  March 18 at 8 p.m. , Cuban composers at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery .

•  March 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. , a Cuban Art overview with Alejandro Anreus, Carol Damian, Juan A. Martinez and Jorge Santis. Anreus is a curator at Rutgers University and Santis is a curator in Fort Lauderdale . Damien is the author of “The Virgin of the Andes : Art and Ritual in Colonial Cuzco .” Martinez is the author of “Cuban Art and National Identity: The Vanguardia Painters.”

•  March 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. , family workshop: Afro-Cuban Theatrical Make-up. Includes face painting demonstrations by Cuban artist Leandro Soto.

•  April 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. , self-portrait painting workshop conducted by Latino artist and art educator Esperanza Altamar.

Also every Wednesday through March 16 there will be Cuban films shown at the Market Arcade Film and Arts Center . All shows are at 7:30 p.m. and cost $8 general admission, $6 Burchfield-Penney and Hallwalls members and $5.50 for seniors and students.

“These films are excellent,” says Heidi Freedman, grants and audience development coordinator at Burchfield-Penney. “They would appeal to anyone who is interested,” Freedman says.

“The idea for this exhibit was from guest curator Lanette Bosch , a Geneseo professor, and is organized by Hispanics United in Buffalo ,” Hayworth says.
