Buffalo State College senior forward Perry Davis was named State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Feb. 16. Davis helped Buffalo State go on a 2- 1 run that week, which improved the team to 12-9 and kept alive hopes of making the SUNYAC playoffs in March.
Over the three- game stretch, Davis averaged 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists, 4.7 steals, and 2.3 blocks. He scored 25 points in a win over Oneonta, and raked in 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists in the victory over SUNY Institute of Technology. Davis also managed to finish with a career- high six steals and three blocks in a loss to Brockport.
Davis hoped to continue such play into the playoffs. After watching his beloved Bengals suffer a tear-jerking, 5 6-58 first round loss to the University of Scranton in the NCAA Division III tournament last season, he was out for retribution this time around.
“I don't want to just make the tournament this time, I want to go all the way. I really feel that we have the potential to do so,” Davis said. “I refuse to lose this time. It was too heartbreaking last year; we had a chance to advance to the second round only to lose by two points!”
Sophomore forward Justin Wright was also looking forward to the playoffs and felt good about the Bengals' chances of being successful this year. He felt that the Bengals were a better team and was confident that they would have advanced well into the playoffs this time.
“I think that we will do well in the playoffs this season, our team made some improvements this year,” he said
Wright thought that the Bengals would have learned from the mistakes they made last season. “We made some mistakes last year against Scranton that will help us this year.”
Well, some things just never change. Despite all the hopes and aspirations that the Bengals had, they still suffered a bitter loss to SUNY Potsdam, 59-45, Feb. 24 at Potsdam. They just can't seem to overcome the curse of the first round.
